Mayumi Souza Lima
Curiosities: The architect Mayumi Watanabe de Souza Lima was born in Japan in 1934. She graduated in Brazil, where she also developed her professional life, having been naturalized Brazilian in 1956. In the country, she worked with big names of the national architecture, such as Vilanova Artigas, Joaquim Guedes and Lina Bo Bardi. She did her graduation in architecture, but her master was in the area of History and Philosophy of Education. This training/ had a direct influence on the architectural work of Mayumi. The architect designed a number of public school projects for the country, having participated in the construction of some of them. She also developed furniture and restoration projects for schools. For over thirty years of working together with educators, primary school administrators, kindergartens and children inside and outside institutions, the architect discussed and analyzed issues related to spaces for children in our society. Following this line of work, she published two books: Educational Spaces, use and construction (Brasilia, MEC / CEDATE, 1986) and The City and the Child (São Paulo, Nobel, 1989).Mayumi also developed it from her academic experience. She was teacher at the Colleges of Architecture and Urbanism at UNB in Brasilia, Santos, São José dos Campos and the School of Engineering of São Carlos. She was affiliated with the Communist Party and played an important role in the discussion about the professional activities of architects from the critique of the capitalist mode of production. She used to put her students in touch with the favelas in the first year of study, seeking the politicization of students. She believed in architecture allied to social changes.Despite her extensive political and professional experience, which also includes residential blocks design of the block 107 North Brasilia and the detailing and coordination of works of the MASP (Art Museum of São Paulo), there aren’t photographic records of Mayumi or of her work available on the internet. She died in 1994.
