Lilly Reich

  • MR 3 Chair

Curiosities: Born in Germany in 1885, Lilly Reich graduated and worked as an architect in that country for several years. She also worked in Austria, England and in the United States. Lilly began her career as a stylist, only profession in the design field in which women were accepted at that time.In 1920, she was the first woman to became director of the Werkund company. There she met the architect Mies van der Rohe, with whom she worked for 13 years. She was the co-author of many famous projects assigned only to the architect, like the Barcelona Pavilion and the House Tugendaht. In 1930, she came along with Mies for the Bauhaus, becoming the first woman to be a teacher at the school. There, she taught interior and furniture design. In 1938, Mies emigrated to the USA. Lilly remained in Germany and was responsible for saving more than 4000 drawings and documents from the architect’s office, which was later bombed during the Second World War. About 900 of these documents were completed by Lilly after the change of Mies. She died in 1947.
