Punjab's (Republic of India's new state capital) urban planning design.
Biography:
Jane Drew and her husband, Edwin Maxwell Fry, established an innovative design system through her numerous projects in West Africa between 1949 and 1960. In 1964 she published the book "Tropical Architecture in the Dry and Humid Zone," which is a collection of the new designs and processes which were developed over these projects.
Further, these African influences - described by Drew and Fry as use of basic forms and strong colours - were used with great effect to bring cultural authenticity to the imported modernist architecture of the time.
In 1961 Jane developed and taught, with the Argentine architect Eduardo Catalano, a course at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) on tropical architecture.
In her project about "Tropical Architecture," Drew and Fry developed the use of the perforated screen. This use was designed to protect the building from the sun, allowing for cross ventilation at the same time. The brise soleil has functions beyond these climate control, adding decorative character to existing basic structural forms.
